Social Book Marking and SEO

We have all heard about social bookmarking and SEO but does it really work? In my opinion, social bookmarking works to help increase back links to your website which is always good but seems to fall flat as far as long term rankings goes. Unless your social bookmarking campaign really takes off you may only see a bump in rankings for a few weeks; but that is about the longest lifespan you can expect.
Something to remember when you are about to try a social bookmarking campaign is do not over do it and try to actually provide something interesting that belongs there. I tend to submit each idea once maybe twice but if it doesn’t get picked up I don’t keep tying. I think of something else and start promoting that. There is nothing worse than someone submitting the same old tired keyword stuff post over and over again.
So is social bookmarking spamming? I don’t think it is but many people disagree. Many white hat extremists believe that you should do nothing to bring in links into your site unless it’s 100% organic (someone likes something on your site so they link to it) but I don’t see this as a violation of Google’s terms and conditions unless you go overboard. A handful of posts should put up any flags but setting up a macro for 500+ posts a day may make cause search engines to scrutinize your site more thoroughly.
Examples of good social bookmarking topics for the SEO industry:
Develop a new technique for optimizing a website.
Show some sort of never before seen comparison of the major search engines.
Demonstrate some wacky things that search engines do like give a funny result from a query.
